Pantera bassist Rex Brown opened up in a recent Rolling Stone Australia interview about the band’s revival, emphasizing that the reformed group is far from being a mere tribute band. Joined by Philip Anselmo on vocals, the lineup features Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne) on guitar and Charlie Benante (Anthrax) on drums, with the full support of the late Abbott brothers’ estates.
Brown reflected on the absence of Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell Abbott, acknowledging the bittersweet reality of performing without them. He remarked, “They’re just not with us man. That’s just fate; it’s the way the ball rolls, dude.”
Highlighting the band’s tightness and readiness, Brown shared insights into their rigorous rehearsal schedule. The unity between him and Benante, particularly, forms a solid foundation, while Wylde’s integration required meticulous preparation to achieve the band’s signature sound.
Despite the new lineup, Brown insists, “This is no tribute band,” stressing the emotional and musical connection they share with Pantera’s legacy. He also teased the possibility of new music, hinting at the band’s openness to creating fresh material while honoring the classic Pantera sound.
The reformed Pantera is not only celebrating the band’s iconic history but also introducing their powerful legacy to a new generation of fans. With major festival headlines and a support slot for Metallica’s 2024 stadium tour, Pantera’s resurgence is a testament to their enduring impact on heavy metal music. Brown’s enthusiasm is palpable as he describes the band’s current state: “This band is on fuckin’ fire, and I couldn’t be happier.”
