Revamping Your Kitchen This Year?  Here are the Biggest Trends to Know and Love

If you’re thinking of redesigning your kitchen space this year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and several Interior Designers want to help you out. They have narrowed down the trends that will dominate not only 2024 but the next three years.

Warm Wood Tones in the Kitchen

The NKBA and House Beautiful’s Carisha Swanson are looking forward to welcoming warm natural wood tones back into kitchens. The trend of coating cabinets in white is taking a backseat! Natural high texture and wood patterns on cabinets bring an organic air to kitchens, especially when they’re part of a contemporary, midcentury, or Scandinavian design.

If wooden kitchen cabinets aren’t in the cards for your kitchen, painting the cabinets a warm-toned hue is another great option. In the coming year, there will be a rise in warm beige-y hues that will serve as an in-between shade from stark white and the brown beiges of years past. Fluted fronts on cabinetry, vanities and just about any other surface will also be hot in 2024.

Exaggerated and Gold Hardware

According to the NKBA, nearly 70% of homeowners are opting for more playful hardware, and 25% are using it to make a color statement. Brands like Emtek and Modern Matter are betting on the trend with grandiose knobs and pulls in their latest collections. The NKBA found that matte black will take second place as homeowners go for gold. Kitchen sink faucets in matte, satin, and brushed finishes will be gleaming in gold to create that warmer atmosphere.

Communal Seating Arrangements

Skip bar-style seating at your kitchen island and enjoy quality conversations with your loved ones where everyone feels involved. “Conversational islands are definitely back versus looking at the cook doing all the work or feeding you island-side,” says Swanson. “Clients are opting for built-ins to look like furniture instead of traditional cabinetry, and there’s a pull towards retro details such as the use of tiles on countertops and tables,” explains Maestri.

Combination Islands

According to Anastasia Casey of IDCO Studio, we’ll get the best of both worlds in 2024 when it comes to kitchen islands. “We’ll see way more combination islands in the kitchen. This means that 50 to 60 percent of the island will have closed storage below, while the remaining 40 to 50 percent will have simple furniture-style legs with large top drawers and open space below for counter-height stools to tuck under,” she says.

Undercounter Refrigerators

According to Swanson, the trend of undercounter refrigeration is going everywhere as manufacturers respond with dual refrigerators and dual undercounter refrigerator drawers. “The idea of appliances living in nontraditional kitchen spaces continues to be a trend, and it’s really all over the house wherever you want to be able to reach quickly for a cold drink. It’s still in the kitchen, but it’s also headed downstairs to the bar and into movie rooms,” she says.

Statement Beverage Stations

Your coffeemaker deserves to be on full display next year. Homeowners are looking to install beverage stations in their kitchens in 2024. This upgrade includes coffee bars with built-in coffee makers, wet bars, and smoothie stations with room to store glassware in the cabinets.

Walk-In Pantries

Pantries are primarily used for food storage but are now being used for so much more. A place to store your countertop appliances, at-home bar supplies, extra cups and mugs, coffee bar, the options are endless. Many are looking for a walk-in pantry to host all the kitchen essentials, along with the dry goods, so that your actual kitchen will look clutter-free on a regular basis.

Glam and Ornate Lighting

“I feel like people are starting to lose the want for an understated kitchen, and the larger-than-life trend is back,” says designer Laura Williams of ATX Interior Design. “For instance, light fixtures that are oversized and a statement piece will be the look of 2024.”

Ginger Curtis, founder and CEO of Urbanology Designs, predicts glam lighting trends in the new year. “Lighting trends will become a key player, with sculptural pendant lights, oversized chandeliers and artistic floor lamps stealing the spotlight.”

Decorative Range Hoods

The NKBA reports we’ll see an uptick in creative range hood designs, including wood, stainless steel, and mixed materials for a custom look. You can always achieve the trend by painting over an existing wooden hood if you want to continue a specific color story in your home.

For a more textured and unique look in the kitchen, plastered range hoods will be all the rage in 2024. This dials up the drama and look of the kitchen space without overwhelming or being too trendy.

Multicolor Kitchens

After a decade of all-white spaces, homeowners are craving color — and not necessarily just one, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association. “By mixing natural wood and painted finishes, you can add more depth, interest and personal flair,” says Stephanie Pierce, director of design at MasterBrand Cabinets. Plus, she says, “you’re not relying on a single finish to stay on trend.”

Creating a kitchen that is whimsical and personality-filled will be all the rage in the new year. No one wants a gray-on-gray kitchen anymore. Be bold and add colors you love to your kitchen space, and it will feed more than just your empty belly.

When asked about kitchen color trends in 2024, NKBA said greens will be the top choice. From calming sage to power-packed emerald, green isn’t going anywhere. Green is easy to incorporate into your kitchen’s color scheme and has the ability to make kitchen cabinets sing.

Stress-Free Layouts

Clear your kitchen of fuss and clutter with a thoughtfully designed minimalist layout. And minimalist doesn’t mean boring! Think cabinets and appliances with push-to-open technology, plenty of pantry space, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, easy-to-clean quartz countertops, and grout-free floors. These features cut down on chores for easy cleaning and upkeep.
