Return to Dust is wasting no time carving out a place in modern rock’s crowded landscape. Formed in 2022 and now based in Los Angeles, the four-piece has quickly built momentum by fusing the grit of 1990s grunge with the punch and polish of contemporary alternative metal.
The band began as a partnership between childhood friends Matty Bielawski and Graham Stanush, who grew up together in Midlothian, Texas. Determined to pursue music seriously, the duo relocated to Los Angeles after encouragement from producer Jim Kaufman, who played a key role in shaping their early sound and direction. With the addition of guitarist Sebastian Gonzalez and drummer London Hudson, Return to Dust solidified into a full-fledged rock outfit ready for the national stage.
Musically, the group leans into thick guitar riffs, layered harmonies, and a moody intensity that echoes the spirit of classic grunge. At the same time, their production and songwriting reflect a modern sensibility, keeping them firmly planted in today’s Active Rock and Alternative Rock formats. Observers often draw parallels to Alice in Chains, citing a similar balance of heaviness and melody.
Their recorded output has followed a steady upward trajectory. The debut EP Black Road arrived in July 2023, introducing listeners to their dark, riff-driven approach. In May 2024, the band expanded its reach with the release of its self-titled full-length album, showcasing greater depth and range while maintaining their signature weight. By August 2025, Return to Dust returned with the EP Speak Like the Dead, featuring the radio single Bored, signaling continued artistic growth and a sharpening sense of identity.
Touring has been central to their rise. In 2024, they joined Sevendust on tour, performing in front of established rock audiences and further building their fan base. Appearances at major rock festivals and shared stages with well-known artists have reinforced their reputation as a dynamic live act that delivers as much energy onstage as they do in the studio.
With a clear aesthetic, consistent output, and a strong touring presence, Return to Dust is positioning itself as part of rock’s next wave, honoring the past while pushing forward with modern force.
