George Michael’s catalog returned to the MTV spotlight at the 2026 Video Music Awards, with a multigenerational group of singers taking on some of the late superstar’s best-known songs.
Sombr opened the tribute by tackling two staples from Michael’s solo career, “Faith” and “Father Figure.” Both tracks helped define Michael’s transformation from Wham! superstar into one of the biggest solo performers of the late 1980s.
RAYE followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” the song Michael originally recorded with Aretha Franklin. The tribute marked RAYE’s second performance of the evening, adding another high-profile appearance to her VMA night.
Teddy Swims then stepped into particularly familiar territory with “Careless Whisper,” one of the signature recordings associated with Michael and a song that has remained a pop and adult contemporary staple for decades.
The performance had another surprise waiting in the wings. Adam Lambert emerged for “Freedom! ’90,” helping bring the tribute to its finale alongside additional British vocalists.
Adam Blackstone served as musical director for the production, bringing the different performers and songs together for a tribute spanning several chapters of Michael’s career.
The timing puts another spotlight on Michael’s landmark Faith era. A live album, George Michael: The Faith Tour, is scheduled for release on November 6, while a feature-length concert film is set to reach U.S. theaters on December 11.
Michael’s connection with MTV stretches back to the height of his solo success. During his career, he collected 16 VMA nominations and four wins, and in 1989 he received the network’s Video Vanguard Award.
Nearly four decades after Faith turned Michael into a solo phenomenon, the VMA tribute demonstrated just how comfortably his songs can move between generations. Putting RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims and Lambert on the same stage also offered a fitting reminder of the range of singers who continue to find something worth revisiting in his catalog
