The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Antonio Pierce following a 4-13 season, the team announced on Tuesday. Despite his efforts to revitalize the struggling franchise, Pierce’s tenure ended after just one full season at the helm.
A Short-Lived Tenure
Pierce, 46, took over as interim head coach in 2023 after the midseason firing of Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. He led the team to a 5-4 finish that year, showing promise and earning the permanent position. However, the Raiders stumbled in 2024, finishing last in the AFC West with a 10-game losing streak—their longest since 2014.
In a statement, the Raiders thanked Pierce for his contributions:
“Antonio grew up a Raiders fan and his Silver and Black roots run deep. We are grateful for his ability to reignite what it means to be a Raider throughout the entire organization. We wish nothing but the best for Antonio and his family in the future.”
Tom Brady Joins the Search for a New Coach
Limited owner Tom Brady is expected to assist primary owner Mark Davis in assembling a collaborative committee to interview head coaching candidates, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
While general manager Tom Telesco will remain in his position, the search for a new head coach marks the team’s fifth coaching change since moving to Las Vegas in 2020 and the ninth since Mark Davis took over in 2011.
A Season of Struggles
The 2024 season began with promise but quickly unraveled. After missing out on drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who went second overall, the Raiders settled on veteran free-agent Gardner Minshew. He signed a two-year, $25 million deal but was benched after just five games in favor of second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell.
Offensive struggles plagued the team all season. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was fired midseason and replaced by Scott Turner, but the Raiders never found stability. Injuries to both quarterbacks only compounded the team’s woes.
A Career Defined by Hard Work
Before coaching, Pierce enjoyed a nine-year playing career as a Pro Bowl linebacker and Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants. However, his lack of experience as a coordinator or head coach above the high school level was a gamble that ultimately did not pay off for the Raiders.
Looking Ahead
With the No. 6 draft pick secured, the Raiders are once again at a crossroads, searching for stability both on the field and on the sidelines. The upcoming hiring process, with Brady’s involvement, will determine whether Las Vegas can finally establish a winning culture after years of upheaval.
Closing Thoughts
Pierce’s tenure, while brief, reignited passion among Raiders fans and players. However, the results fell short of expectations, leaving the team to chart a new course in its quest for success.
