Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer put some swirling rumors about Johnny Depp’s potential return to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, which Bruckheimer is trying to rebuild around a new protagonist.
“Not at this point,” he said when asked about Depp. “The future is yet to be decided.”
Bruckheimer, who just polished off Memorial Day’s Top Gun: Maverick, then went on to reveal some details about what’s next for the Pirates world, including the fact that actress Margot Robbie is the ideal choice for the films’ next star.
“We’re developing two ‘Pirates’ scripts. One with her, one without,” Bruckheimer said.
He then went on to explain that studios want big male names on the screen and that the list of women is “just not that strong a list yet.”
So, for now, Depp will not be reprising his iconic role.
