Primus, one of hard rock’s most enduring acts, is suddenly without a drummer. The band announced Tuesday that Tim “Herb” Alexander, whose technical drumming has been central to their unique sound, has left the band “effective immediately.” Alexander informed bandmates Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde of his decision via email, stating he had “lost his passion for playing,” according to a social media post from Primus.
A Shocking Departure for a Band Staple
Alexander’s departure marks a major shift for Primus, who formed in 1984 in the San Francisco Bay Area and brought Alexander into the lineup in 1989. His complex rhythms and precision drumming were key to Primus’ distinctive sound, which blends heavy metal, punk rock, and alt-rock influences. His work helped define fan favorites like “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver,” “My Name is Mud,” and the “South Park” theme song.
Alexander’s exit caught the band off-guard. Primus shared that multiple attempts to discuss his decision were met with only a short email response, leaving them to make “tough decisions” for upcoming shows and tours.
New Year’s Eve Show to Feature a Special Lineup
Despite Alexander’s sudden departure, Primus plans to move forward with their annual New Year’s Eve concert at the historic Fox Theater in Oakland. Instead of canceling, Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde will “pivot to an augmented version of Primus” for the event. They’ll be joined by members from Claypool’s other projects, Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade, in what the band promises will be “a one-time special event” for fans.
Searching for “The Greatest Drummer on Earth”
Looking ahead, Primus is officially on the hunt for a new drummer who can match Alexander’s renowned skill and energy. The band has announced that future tours are still planned and that they are seeking “the greatest drummer on earth” to carry on Alexander’s legacy and bring fresh energy to the iconic group.
Alexander’s departure undoubtedly marks the end of an era for Primus, but the band seems determined to keep rocking. With the New Year’s Eve show lined up and a global search for their next drummer underway, fans can look forward to seeing Primus evolve while staying true to its roots.
