Prabal Gurung’s Collaboration with JC Penney is Here

Prabal Gurung has brought his fashion magic to JCPenney. Last week, the retailer and designer release a limited-edition, 25-piece collaboration titled “Impower by Prabal Gurung.” It’s made up entirely of dresses with the exception of one jumpsuit, each piece infused with a sense of fun and a vibrancy that’s true to spring — and available in sizes XS through 3XL.

“My biggest source of inspiration has always been women,” Gurung says, citing his single mother, who he’s very close to (“who lives in my building, who I have breakfast with every morning”), as an example. “Every monumental thing that has happened in my life has been because of women. And I have alway believed the individual and collective power of women.”

Prabal Gurung clothes tend to be bold and luxurious — and are priced accordingly, i.e. out of the average shopper’s price range. However, through this collection, fans will be able to access his pieces at JCPenney for less than $100 a pop. “It’s my way of saying, ‘Thank you for caring,'” he says. “‘Thank you for, through challenging times, sending those messages that kept me going.'”

Just like his namesake line, Impower by Prabal Gurung is bursting with color and floral prints, which have a special meaning to him. “Flowers bring joy no matter how much money you have — a bodega flower to a designer flower,” he says. “It’s so democratic in its approach of bringing hope, optimism and joy.” The pieces are an inspired by “feminine-leaning ideas and feminine-leaning people,” he says. “We’re stronger in color, which is literally and metaphorically the collection.”

Norman Jean Roy shot the campaign, which features Shalom Harlow, Natalia Bryant, Varsha Thapa, Nyakio Grieco, Cece Meadows and Sara Happ. JCPenney donated $10,000 to each woman’s charity of choice, as well as Shikshya Foundation Nepal, a nonprofit in Gurung’s home country, with which he works closely.
