Pixar has just released concept art for its 2023 film, Elemental, which is set to arrive in theaters on June 16, 2023.
The film, directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, follows characters Ember and Wade, who live in a city where fire, water, land, and air-residents live alongside one another. Ember, a fiery woman, and Wade, a relaxed and easygoing guy, pair up to discover just how much two unlikely elements can have in common.
Elemental was inspired by Sohn’s own childhood in New York.
“My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental.”
“Our story is based on the classic elements — fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
Lightyear, Pixar’s upcoming 2022 feature, will be the first Pixar film in the last few years to return to theaters, following Soul and Turning Red‘s Disney+ releases. The film will premiere this Father’s Day weekend.
