Although he was the first to publicly acknowledge the Beatles’ breakup (while simultaneously promoting his own solo material), Paul McCartney newly reveals that his bandmate, John Lennon, was actually the one who initiated the band’s separation.
“I am not the person who instigated the split,” McCartney reassures. “John walked into a room one day and said, ‘I am leaving the Beatles.’” He explained that, at the time, Lennon’s focus was on “making a new life with Yoko.”
McCartney also revealed that Lennon saw the breakup as more of a divorce, and that the only reason McCartney was the one who broke the news to the masses was because he “was fed up of hiding it.” As a result, Sir Paul was blamed for the legendary demise for decades.
