Patron XO Café  is BACK, but only for a Limited Time

The news that Patrón’s beloved coffee liqueur Patrón XO Cafe has fans all abuzz with excitement. On April 1, Patrón took to social media to announce that, no joke, the fan-favorite tequila-based coffee liqueur had returned “for a one-time, limited-quantity release,” and only while supplies last.

As Food & Wine reports, when the Bacardi-owned brand discontinued the popular liqueur in 2021 to focus on its core range of tequilas, XO Cafe fans were understandably unhappy. Passionate consumers challenged the decision by creating an online petition that garnered more than 4,000 signatures, though despite these efforts, Patrón halted XO Cafe production that fall.

“With the explosion of the tequila category, our focus is on growing and protecting production and supply of our core super- and ultra-premium tequilas,” Mauricio Vergara, president and COO of Patrón said at the time. “As a result, we have focused our production on our core tequilas: Patrón Silver, Patrón Reposado, Patrón Añejo, and other Patrón super- and ultra-premium variants — as that is our top priority.”

The move certainly made sense then — when coffee liqueur sales were tanking. But just a year later, in 2022, the Espresso Martini became one of the most popular cocktails in America, driving massive demand for the discontinued Patrón expression.

When Patrón XO Cafe first launched in 1992, it quickly gained a dedicated following, eventually becoming one of the fastest-growing expressions in the tequila brand’s portfolio. In 2012, after two decades of success, the XO Cafe range expanded with the launch of Patrón XO Cafe Dark Cocoa. At the launch, Francisco Alcaraz, Patrón’s longtime master distiller and recipe creator for the brand’s entire line, said, “Patrón XO Cafe has always been one of my proudest achievements.”

Patrón XO Cafe is a 70-proof coffee liqueur that combines Patrón Silver Tequila and Arabica coffee beans sourced from the states of Veracruz and Chiapas. The latest release comes with a suggested MSRP of $42.99, though seeing as resellers were demanding upwards of $100 during the previous drought, it remains to be seen how long that price will remain.

This latest release is currently rolling out now nationwide, with some consumers stating they’ve already spotted Patrón XO Cafe bottles on store shelves.
