Our Top Five Holiday Songs

There are fewer shopping days than you think there are to Christmas, and your local radio station has probably begun playing holiday music. Here are five great Christmas tunes…

“Step Into Christmas” by Elton John is a wonderful example of an original Elton/Bernie song from 1973 that remains timeless. The song is well produced

“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” John Lennon’s cerebral 1971 holiday tune was written and recorded at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The song remains a cult favorite.

“Run Rudolph Run” by Chuck Berry from 1958 and remains a holiday standard today. We honor Chuck who died this year at the age of 90.

“Do They Know it’s Christmas” from Band Aid, released in 1984 to raise awareness and money for the 85 Ethiopia famine, and featured every popular rocker that could get a flight to London. From Sting to U2’s Bono and Adam Clayton, Phil Collins to all the ladies of Bananarama, this tune said it all.

“I Believe in Father Christmas” by Greg Lake was actually written to protest the over-commercialization of Christmas, not intended to be such a holiday favorite. It finished 2nd in the charts in the UK behind Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in 1974.

Honorable mentions go to Paul McCartney and “Wonderful Christmas,” “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” by Bruce Springsteen, “Little Saint Nick” from the Beach Boys, and any Christmas song from Phil Spector.
