Obama and Larry David Team Up for Hysterical History Series on HBO

Former President Barack Obama and comedy legend Larry David are joining forces for an unexpected—and wildly ambitious—new sketch comedy series for HBO. Designed to honor America’s 250th anniversary, the as-yet-untitled show will spotlight absurd, hilarious takes on moments from U.S. history, with David’s signature neurotic flair steering the tone.

The series marks the first collaboration between Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, and HBO. Until now, Higher Ground has primarily partnered with Netflix on acclaimed projects like American Factory and Becoming. This new venture sees David and his longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer penning the sketches, with cameos expected from Curb Your Enthusiasm alumni and surprise guests.

Obama joked in a statement, “I’ve tackled global crises—but nothing could prepare me for Larry David.” Meanwhile, David claimed he was forced out of retirement after a “suds-related tragedy” at a foam party and the mysterious disappearance of his bees.

Blending presidential poise with offbeat satire, the series promises to be a comedic exploration of America’s past—equal parts educational and ridiculous. HBO’s Amy Gravitt summed it up best: “We’re thrilled Larry’s back, and even more excited he’s bringing Barack with him.”
