Nicole Kidman turned heads Monday night, subtly referencing her viral AMC ad while leaving The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The 57-year-old actress wore a striking pinstripe suit, reminiscent of the one she donned in the cult-favorite commercial.
A Stylish Homage
Kidman’s ensemble, designed by Dolce & Gabbana, featured a double-breasted pinstripe Turlington jacket adorned with an organza flower and matching wool trousers. Underneath, she paired the suit with a white t-shirt promoting her upcoming film, Babygirl, written in light pink lettering.
Fans were quick to connect the outfit to the gray pinstripe suit from Kidman’s 2021 AMC ad, which became a viral sensation and cemented her status as the face of cinematic magic.
From Iconic Ad to Leading Role
While Kidman’s AMC ad was all about celebrating the magic of the movies, her new film Babygirl takes her back to the big screen in a very different way.
In the erotic thriller, Kidman stars as Romy, a high-powered CEO who embarks on an illicit affair with an intern, Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson). Written and directed by Halina Reijn, the film first premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024, earning Kidman a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.
At the 2024 Gotham Awards, Kidman added a playful touch when discussing the film. When asked who audiences should bring to see it, she joked:
“Whoever you want to, but you can also watch it alone.”
The AMC Ad That Became a Phenomenon
Kidman’s 2021 AMC ad captured the hearts of moviegoers worldwide. The commercial sees Kidman walking into an AMC theater on a rainy night, delivering an impassioned monologue about the transformative power of cinema:
“We come to AMC Theatres to laugh, to cry, to care, because we need that, all of us.”
The ad includes the now-iconic line:
“Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”
Kidman herself has acknowledged the ad’s unlikely viral success, sharing in a 2022 interview:
“I can’t tell you why it worked or why it’s gone viral. But the reaction is a direct result of the amount of people going back to theaters to enjoy the movies. And that is exciting.”
In August 2022, AMC CEO Adam Aron announced that Kidman would continue her role as the company’s spokesperson for another year, emphasizing her role in revitalizing enthusiasm for moviegoing.
What’s Next for Kidman?
With a Golden Globe nod for Babygirl, a viral ad legacy, and continued style statements, Kidman shows no signs of slowing down. Whether it’s celebrating cinema or commanding the screen in bold roles, the actress remains as iconic as ever.
