The New Jersey Devils and The Seattle Kraken recently celebrated girl power through special warmup jerseys to honor gender equality before their games on Tuesday. The New Jersey Devil’s jersey’s were designed by a local New Jersey artist, Danielle Cartier. Their warmup jersey’s featured a colorful collage design that represents how gender is constructed.
Cartier told the Devils on Twitter, “Working on this project has been an overall amazing experience, I am thrilled to be able to translate my style and artwork into a design that supports gender equality.”
The Devils also managed to walk in with Girls Learn to Play participants prior to their game against the Maple Leaf’s at the Prudential Center.
Whereas, Seattle had their own celebration for their Women in Hockey Night for their matchup against the Anaheim Ducks at Climate Pledge Arena. Seattle’s warmups included a butterfly that was shaped like an S as the crest of their logo and Seattle’s state flower, a rhododendron, on the shoulder patches.
Seattle’s jerseys were designed by a local Seattle illustrator, Erin Wallace. Wallace said of the design, “There’s never going to be one way to display or represent women, I could think feminine-strong like a bird of prey, but I wanted to take obviously feminine in this stereotypical way and subvert it in a playful way. That’s why I chose to draw a butterfly … in my research, I came across folklore across the world, like a swarm of butterflies would often be seen as an omen. It’s mythical like the Kraken.”
