Ncuti Gatwa, who is best known for playing Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education, will play the role of The Doctor in the beloved BBC show Doctor Who.
Gatwa makes history as the first time a Black person has been cast as the show’s lead character, full-time. He is also among the youngest Doctors to ever fulfill the role and follows Jodie Whittaker, who was the first woman to play the role when she was cast in 2017.
“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared,” Gatwa said in a press release. “Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”
Gatwa has been twice nominated for Best Male Comedy Performance at the British Film and Television Awards for his role as Eric Effiong.
