In New York City, and literally every major urban area, (most notably along the Atlantic seaboard) young teenage men sang on street corners looking to be discovered. The sound was called Doo Wop, and as it turned out, not all the stars from this early music genre were from New York City. Here are a few notable Doo Wop stars that didn’t come from the Big Apple…
The Five Satins and “In The Still Of The Night” were not only their most popular song, but it put Hartford Connecticut on the map, the birthplace of the group. The Five Satins were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.
“Earth Angel” from the Penguins was a smash hit for this Los Angles group, who met while classmates of Fremont High School.
The Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers song “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” was an instant classic in 1965. Frankie was indeed involved with three women legally at the time of his death.
The Flamingos hit the charts with “I Only Have Eyes for You” and were from Chicago.
The Del Vikings were the first integrated group selling millions of records based on their hit “Come Go With Me,” are not from the Big Apple, but Pittsburgh, PA.
