Michelle Trachtenberg, renowned for her roles in Harriet the Spy and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was found unresponsive in her New York City apartment on February 26, 2025, at the age of 39. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner reported that both the cause and manner of Trachtenberg’s death are “undetermined.” This conclusion follows her family’s objection to an autopsy due to religious reasons, limiting the extent of the medical examination.
Prior to her passing, Trachtenberg had undergone a liver transplant and faced various health challenges, including back and bone issues. Friends noted her increasingly reclusive behavior and frail appearance in recent months.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Sarah Michelle Gellar, her co-star from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, shared a heartfelt message, while Rosie O’Donnell, who worked with Trachtenberg on Harriet the Spy, expressed sorrow over her struggles in recent years.
In her final months, Trachtenberg was collaborating on a screenplay adaptation of “Toy Monster,” a biography detailing the life of Jack Ryan, a pivotal figure in the creation of Barbie and Hot Wheels. Her boyfriend, Jay Cohen, and producing partner, Casey Tebo, are committed to bringing this project to fruition in her honor.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s legacy as a talented actress and cherished friend endures, even as questions surrounding her untimely death remain.
