On a remarkable Wednesday night at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., Elton John and Bernie Taupin were honored with the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library of Congress. The celebration was amplified with an unexpected performance by Metallica, who took to the stage to pay homage to the songwriting duo with a heavy metal rendition of “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” from John and Taupin’s celebrated album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
With Elton John himself seated in the audience, Metallica infused the classic track with their iconic metal edge, as James Hetfield’s vocals reverberated through the hall, complemented by the powerful instrumentals of bandmates Kirk Hammett, Rob Trujillo, and Lars Ulrich. The performance showcased a harmonious blend of genres, celebrating the enduring impact of John and Taupin’s songwriting.
The evening was further graced with performances by Joni Mitchell, Charlie Puth, Maren Morris, Annie Lennox, and Brandi Carlile, each offering their renditions of John-Taupin classics. Elton John, taking the stage himself, performed “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” and “Your Song,” before joining all performers for a memorable onstage photo.
