Metal Community Mourns Loss of Mastodon Co-Founder Brent Hinds After Tragic Motorcycle Crash

Heavy metal fans are in mourning following the sudden death of Brent Hinds, co-founder and former guitarist of Mastodon. The 51‑year‑old musician was fatally injured in a motorcycle collision on August 20 in Atlanta, when a BMW SUV failed to yield at an intersection, striking his Harley‑Davidson. The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed he died from multiple blunt-force injuries, with the incident ruled accidental.

Hinds played a pivotal role in shaping Mastodon’s sound, blending progressive and sludge metal influences across eight studio albums—from Remission to Hushed and Grim. He was known for his banjo-influenced guitar style and lyrical contributions that helped propel the band to critical acclaim, earning them a Grammy in 2018 for “Sultan’s Curse.”

His departure from the band in March 2025 had stirred controversy—initially described as mutual, but later contested by Hinds, who stated he was forced out. Despite their differences, Mastodon responded to his death with heartfelt words, calling him a “creative force” and asking for privacy for all affected.

As tributes pour in from fans and fellow musicians, Brent Hinds’s legacy stands as a testament to his innovative spirit and profound influence on modern metal.
