Lionel Messi once again proved why he’s considered the greatest of all time, netting a stunning free kick to seal a 2-1 comeback victory for Inter Miami over FC Porto in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
In front of a roaring crowd at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Messi bent a trademark left-footed strike over the wall and into the top corner in the 54th minute, marking his 50th goal in just 61 appearances for the club. The goal came after Inter Miami equalized through Telasco Segovia, who capitalized on a sharp cross from Marcelo Weigandt.
This victory marked a historic moment: Inter Miami became the first Concacaf team to defeat a European club in an international FIFA competition. It also keeps Miami in strong contention for the knockout rounds with four points in Group A.
Head coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s leadership and relentless desire to win, despite battling fatigue late in the match. “He’s the best ever, but it’s his determination that always amazes us,” Mascherano said.
Midfielder Federico Redondo added, “Messi keeps surprising us. Every day he reminds us why he’s the greatest.”
Miami now faces Palmeiras, needing only a draw to advance.
