McDonald’s in New Zealand launched a Mullet Burger that’s all Business in the Front, Party in the Back

An international McDonald’s outpost just turned a haircut into a cheeseburger, but luckily, you don’t need to book an overseas flight to try it.

As Delish reports, the chain recently introduced what fans are calling the “McMullet,” a limited-time item (unfortunately) launched only in New Zealand. The concept is simple: It’s a standard cheeseburger with one extra slice of cheese placed so it hangs out the back of the bun. The result is a burger that mirrors the classic mullet haircut: business in the front, party in the back.

But the idea wasn’t born in a boardroom; it actually started on social media. After fans online started joking about what a “mullet burger” would look like, McDonald’s New Zealand decided to run with it. The brand turned the concept into a real-life activation at one of its Auckland locations. For a short time, customers could order the McMullet in person and take part in a full-fledged mullet festival.

The fast food space was redesigned with mullet-inspired details, and the crowd showed up ready to match the energy. Some people already had the haircut, while others got one on-site, thanks to barbers offering free trims during the event. The launch also included a mullet competition, with one winner walking away with a year of free cheeseburgers and free haircuts. It’s unclear which prize is more valuable.

Unlike other international McDonald’s items, this one doesn’t rely on regional ingredients or limited-time sauces. It’s just a cheeseburger with an extra slice of cheese—that means you can order it in the U.S. right now. All you have to do is ask for a regular cheeseburger with an extra slice of cheese. Once you have it, adjust the placement so the cheese sticks out slightly from the back of the bun, and voila! You have an homage to 2026’s trendiest haircut.

McDonald’s didn’t just introduce a new menu item; it responded to a joke and turned it into something real. Even if the official version stays in New Zealand, the idea doesn’t have to. And since May is “American Cheese Month,” why not celebrate by getting some extra for your burger and having a party in the back!
