We are officially into the fall season, and Halloween right around the corner. This time of year brings apple cider donuts, pumpkin spice everything, and lots and lots of candy. Another hallmark? McDonald’s Happy Meal Boo Buckets.
As Delish reports, every year, the fast-food chain releases limited-edition plastic buckets for trick-or-treating. “Halloween buckets are popping up everywhere like ghosts in the night – and hey, imitation is the most BOO-tiful form of flattery,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “But let’s be real: there’s only one OG Halloween bucket, and it comes with a Happy Meal.”
This Year’s Boo Buckets Feature 5 Characters
For a limited time, these spooky-themed buckets will be replacing the usual red and yellow Happy Meal box. Available while supplies last, the Boo Buckets feature five characters in total, three classic and two new additions, according to McDonald’s. This year’s pails, which feature familiar faces in Ghost, Pumpkin and Goblin, along with newbies Cat and Zombie, come in an assortment of colors, including white, orange, green, black and red.
Since each character has three different expressions, McDonald’s customers will be able to collect all of the variations. Boo Buckets also come with stickers, “giving folks the chance to customize their bucket to make them look fa-boo-lous,” the restaurant chain said.
We. Want. Lids.
In years past, fans have had many thoughts on the designs—and that’s no different this year. An Instagram post by @markie_devo about the Boo Buckets has racked up somewhat mixed reactions.
Like last year, many aren’t impressed by the Golden Arches on the handle and the lack of a proper lid. “WE. WANT. LIDS,” one user commented. Another user even tagged McDonald, saying, “nobody wants these we want the retro buckets with the lids thank you 🖤.” Someone else wrote, “I would actually go out and buy several-I like the expansion to cat and zombie–BUT I want an actual lid…So sadly, I won’t get any.”
The lid complaints were a common theme: “OK, at least the designs on the front are cute, but what the heck, why can’t they put the topper on it? It would be way cuter with the lid. I would pay an extra buck for it and also it should be available starting at least the second week of October sheesh.” Another person commented, “Why is it so hard for them to replicate the originals 😓.”
Despite the lid fury, many seem to love the new zombie and cat characters. “Absolutely have to get the black cat 🖤,” one Instagrammer commented, with another saying they “love the zombie one!”
Starting October 21, McDonald’s Boo Buckets are available with the purchase of a Happy Meal, while supplies last.
