Nearly three years after Matthew Perry’s death, a new Netflix documentary is offering audiences a more personal look at the beloved actor whose portrayal of Chandler Bing helped define one of television’s most successful sitcoms.
The three-part series, *The One About Matthew Perry*, premiered October 27 and explores the complicated life behind the familiar face of *Friends*. Through archival interviews and conversations with family members, longtime friends, and former colleagues, the documentary examines Perry’s extraordinary professional achievements alongside his decades-long struggle with addiction.
Directed by Mary Robertson, the production takes a biographical approach rather than concentrating on the criminal cases connected to Perry’s death. It also gives viewers an opportunity to understand the actor through the experiences of people who knew him away from the cameras.
Among those participating is Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who discusses the emotional toll his substance use problems had on their family. Several longtime friends also share memories of the actor, offering perspectives on his personality, relationships, and repeated attempts at recovery.
Perry achieved international fame when *Friends* premiered on NBC in 1994. As Chandler Bing, he became known for his sharp delivery, self-deprecating humor, and ability to bring vulnerability to a character who frequently used jokes to navigate uncomfortable situations.
The show’s enormous popularity transformed Perry into a household name while he was still a young actor. Yet his professional success did not protect him from serious personal difficulties.
His problems with prescription painkillers intensified after an injury sustained during the filming of the 1997 romantic comedy *Fools Rush In*. What followed was a prolonged struggle involving rehabilitation programs, periods of sobriety, and recurring setbacks.
The documentary illustrates how those challenges affected his work and personal relationships. His sister estimates that Perry spent approximately $7 million seeking treatment over his lifetime, although the actor previously placed that figure closer to $9 million.
Even while facing these difficulties, Perry continued pursuing creative opportunities beyond the sitcom that made him famous.
Following the conclusion of *Friends* in 2004, he appeared in projects including Aaron Sorkin’s *Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip* and the comedy *Mr. Sunshine*. Neither achieved the lasting success of his earlier television work.
He also explored theater, writing *The End of Longing*, a play that premiered in London’s West End in 2016. The production addressed themes of addiction and recovery, subjects closely connected to Perry’s own experiences.
For those who knew him, his career represented both remarkable accomplishments and possibilities that were never fully realized.
The documentary also addresses the circumstances surrounding Perry’s death in October 2023. The actor was 54 when he died from the acute effects of ketamine. Subsequent investigations resulted in criminal proceedings involving individuals connected to the drug’s distribution and administration.
One particularly painful aspect for Perry’s family involved his longtime assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, whose involvement in obtaining and administering ketamine became part of the criminal case.
Rather than allowing those circumstances to dominate the story, the Netflix production places greater emphasis on Perry’s life, the people who cared about him, and the challenges he worked to overcome.
Perry had previously discussed his addiction and recovery efforts publicly, including in his 2022 memoir, *Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing*.
The new documentary continues that conversation through the perspectives of people who witnessed different chapters of his life.
For audiences who remember Perry primarily as the endlessly sarcastic Chandler Bing, the series offers a broader portrait of a performer whose public humor existed alongside significant private struggles.
His legacy remains closely connected to the laughter he brought millions of viewers, but the documentary also highlights the determination, vulnerability, and human relationships that shaped the man behind the character.
