Country music star Martina McBride shared heartbreaking news with her fans on Saturday, Jan. 18, announcing the sudden passing of her father, Daryl Schiff, at the age of 86.
“Our hearts are broken,” McBride, 58, wrote in an emotional Instagram post. “My dad passed away Tuesday night, suddenly and peacefully at his home.”
Remembering a Life of Music and Family
Schiff, a third-generation family farmer and accomplished musician, was a central figure in McBride’s life and career. He led the family band, The Schiffters, and left a lasting impression on his local community as a singer and performer.
McBride shared a touching photo of her father on stage, cowboy hat raised high, symbolizing his passion for life and music. She reminisced about their deep connection, forged over thousands of nightly phone calls since her mother’s passing five years ago.
“I’m so grateful for those more than 1,800 conversations,” McBride reflected, noting she had recorded some of his stories, which are now cherished keepsakes.

McBride detailed her father’s active and fulfilling life, including his love for his family, friendships, and hobbies. He remained independent until his passing, driving himself and enjoying coffee with friends at the local CO-OP.
She also highlighted his personality, sharing anecdotes about their shared hobbies and his endearing habit of recounting his grocery store purchases during their calls. “He was such an important member of our community,” McBride wrote, adding that people still speak fondly of attending Schiffters dances and hearing him sing.

In her tribute, McBride expressed the profound impact her father had on shaping her character and career. “So much of who I am came from him,” she wrote. The “Independence Day” singer also acknowledged the depth of her grief, saying, “There is so much more I could write, and probably will.”
