Maybelline’s latest campaign for its Falsies Surreal Mascara, unveiled Friday, features an unlikely yet much-beloved duo: Gen-Z influencer Bretman Rock and certified Renaissance woman Martha Stewart. While the pairing may seem incongruous (given her work with Snoop Dog, Stewart seems to enjoy subverting our expectations), each star is a beauty industry darling in their own right.
In the ad spot, Rock gazes into a mirror while applying said mascara, asking, “mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the baddest of them all?” before being transported to a floral-laden daydream with Stewart and a pile of perfect-looking brownies. “Your lashes look incredible, may I try?” Stewart asks, before getting her own magical lash makeover.
“Working with two icons, Martha Stewart and Maybelline New York, was such a surreal experience, especially because I walked onto set and there were two fluffy chickens on my makeup table,” Rock said in a press statement. “I’ve always had a passion and interest in opportunities that really think outside of the box, and this campaign checked all these boxes for me. Not to mention that the Falsies Surreal Mascara really takes my lashes to a new dimension.”
While there’s a lot going on in the commercial — from the sparkles to the mascara-as-magic-wand wielding — we can’t help but be taken by the dynamic, generation-spanning duo.
