According to wtov9.com, Marshall County Schools decided to celebrate the International Day of The Girl on Tuesday with the CTE department in order to prepare a special workshop just for the girls. Fifth graders got to learn all about girls in STEM at John Marshall High School, giving them something to look forward to in their futures in STEM. The girls were also given a chance to use STEM skills to create lava lamps, make boats float with the help of JM STEM students, and of course coding.
The workshop was titled ‘Girl Powered’ and the girls had a guest speaker from WVU Statler College of Engineering, Lydia Knusten. A career development counselor for Marshall County Schools, Melanie Knutsen stated that, “Sometimes girls are a little hesitant to try things in the STEM field, So, this is an opportunity for them to come just as young ladies and experience technology, science, math without boys around, and they can just kind of learn and experiment as a girl.”
Emily Druschel, a biomedical STEM project student added in, “Especially because we need more women around here, and every one of these programs we have at John Marshall to help them learn what they want to do as they get older.”
