This is the year of rock and roll musicals, given that Springsteen has enjoyed a long stay on Broadway this past year, David Byrne is writing a musical, and the Who’s Peter Townshend is busy writing his as well. The Broadway play and eventual movie ‘Rock of Ages’ proved to be a commercial success a few years ago, inspiring real rockers to sit down and imagine the possibilities.
We now hear that Dire Straits founding member Mark Knopfler is finishing a musical based on the 1983 ‘Local Hero’ film, with a projected open date at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in the spring of 2019.
The project has a strong Scottish feel, as Scottish filmmaker Bill Forsyth has been assigned the directing responsibilities, and the story is about an American businessman who travels to Scotland to save a Scottish business.
Mark Knopfler will be busy later this year of course, as he and the entire Dire Straits band will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame April 14th in Cleveland.
