Mariska Hargitay is adding another milestone to her celebrated television career after being selected to host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The longtime star of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” will lead television’s biggest night when the ceremony airs live on NBC and streams on Peacock on Sept. 14 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The announcement marks a historic moment, as Hargitay becomes the first woman to host the Emmy Awards in 15 years. She is also one of only a handful of women to serve as the ceremony’s solo host during the past quarter century.
Hargitay has become one of television’s most recognizable faces through her portrayal of Olivia Benson, a role she has played since 1999. Her performance has earned multiple Emmy nominations and a Primetime Emmy Award, while helping make the series one of the longest-running dramas in television history.
Her hosting duties come during another busy year. In addition to returning for a new season of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Hargitay is also receiving attention for directing and producing the documentary “My Mom Jayne,” which explores the life and legacy of her mother, Hollywood icon Jayne Mansfield.
The Emmy Awards return to NBC this year as part of the annual broadcast network rotation. The announcement also arrives just ahead of the official nominations, setting the stage for one of television’s biggest celebrations as the industry prepares to honor the year’s top performers and productions.
