Just the other day, Maria Sharapova failed a drug test for Meldonium and now her attorney is saying she has been taking it for 10 years. She didn’t realize she was breaking the rules though as she knew the drug by another name. The drug was only just recently proclaimed to be illegal, as the World Anti-Doping Agency was only aware of the drug as of 2015.
With this negative publicity surrounding a failed drug test, Sharapova has seen many of her sponsors cut ties with her. TAG Heuer, Porsche, and Nike have backed off their relationships with her in recent days. This is a huge hit for Sharapova, who is the highest female paid athlete in the world over the last 11 years. Just his past year, she earned just under $30 million.
