Margaret Cho isn’t holding back when it comes to her complicated history with Ellen DeGeneres. The comedian recently reflected on their decades-long relationship during an appearance on The Kelly Mantle Show podcast, calling DeGeneres “a mean girl, kind of,” despite also being “real nice” at times.
Cho, 56, explained that tension may have stemmed from DeGeneres’ romantic partners. “Her girlfriends and wives always liked me,” Cho noted, adding that some women naturally gravitate toward female comics. “But yeah, Ellen was really weird, and not nice to me for most of my career.”
The Fire Island actress recalled opening for DeGeneres in the 1980s, well before her rise to mainstream fame, but claimed that when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show years later, DeGeneres acted like they were strangers.
One lingering sore spot for Cho was the time DeGeneres allegedly cut footage from an interview with David Bowie, during which the music icon gushed about Cho. “I’m gonna take it personally,” Cho admitted.
DeGeneres has kept a lower profile since her talk show ended in 2022 amid toxic workplace allegations, later addressing the controversy in her 2024 Netflix special.
