Maren Morris is drawing a clear line between evolution and imitation. In a new interview with The Zoe Report, the Grammy-winning singer opened up about her path from country prodigy to pop powerhouse — and shared why she’s skeptical of pop artists dabbling in country music.
“I think people like cosplaying at it or doing it because it’s trendy,” Morris said, stressing that her own roots run deep. “You can Google my history and find me at 10 years old with a guitar singing country music.”
While some might see Morris’ hits like “The Middle” and “The Bones” as a departure from her country beginnings, the singer insists her move was about artistic integrity — not abandoning the genre she grew up with. “Country music is not a classroom that you just leave,” she explained. “It’s a family. It’s a sound. It’s a feeling.”
Morris’ transition came amid frustrations with mainstream country’s slow reckoning with issues of inclusion, a sentiment she made clear in a 2023 Los Angeles Times interview. For Morris, growth meant moving forward — but not forgetting where she started.
Authenticity, she makes clear, is the real badge of honor.
