Manchester United delivered a dramatic Champions League comeback on Tuesday night, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford and provide manager Michael Carrick with a desperately needed victory.
With pressure mounting following nine consecutive matches without a win, United entered the European encounter facing serious questions about their performances and the direction of the team. Those concerns only intensified during a disastrous opening period against the Italian visitors.
Roma struck first through Matías Soulé in the 11th minute before Donyell Malen converted a penalty six minutes later. The early goals exposed familiar defensive weaknesses and left the home supporters frustrated as United struggled to establish themselves in the contest.
By halftime, Carrick’s side appeared headed for another damaging defeat. The players were met with boos from sections of the Old Trafford crowd, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with the club’s difficult season.
However, the second half produced a remarkable change in momentum.
United received an opportunity to reduce the deficit when Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the penalty area. Bruno Fernandes initially saw his spot kick saved, but the referee ordered a retake because of encroachment. The United captain converted his second attempt in the 58th minute, giving the home side renewed hope.
The goal transformed the atmosphere as United began pressing Roma with greater urgency. Bryan Mbeumo came agonizingly close to scoring when his effort struck both posts, while the visitors struggled to contain the increasing pressure.
United’s persistence finally paid off in the 83rd minute.
A defensive mistake by Roma’s Leonardo Balerdi presented Cunha with an opportunity inside the penalty area, and the Brazilian forward reacted quickly to bring the teams level.
Just three minutes later, Cunha completed the turnaround with another decisive finish. Collecting a pass from substitute Shea Lacey, he fired past goalkeeper Devis Vásquez at the near post to send Old Trafford into celebration.
The evening took another unexpected turn when Cunha received a second yellow card for a late challenge during stoppage time. Having already been booked for removing his shirt while celebrating, the forward was dismissed, forcing United to protect their narrow advantage with ten players.
Despite the late setback, Carrick’s team held on to secure its first victory in ten matches.
The result offered a welcome reprieve for the United manager, whose future had become a major talking point following the club’s prolonged struggles. It also strengthened United’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, the victory does not erase the problems that have troubled the team throughout the campaign. United’s defensive vulnerability, inconsistent performances and disappointing domestic results remain serious issues.
Carrick will now look to build on the comeback as his side prepares to face Aston Villa in the Premier League.
For one memorable European night, however, Manchester United rediscovered the resilience and attacking determination that supporters have been waiting to see. Whether the comeback marks the beginning of a sustained recovery remains to be seen.
