Macklemore is standing behind his pro-Palestinian message after remarks during his opening performances for Ed Sheeran sparked criticism from advocacy groups and fellow artists.
The rapper appeared at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as part of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, where he used time onstage to express support for Palestinians and call for a “Free Palestine.” He also performed his protest track “Hind’s Hall,” incorporating imagery connected to the war in Gaza and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The performance quickly became a flashpoint outside the stadium.
Several Jewish advocacy organizations criticized Macklemore’s presentation, with the Israeli-American Council launching a petition seeking his removal from Sheeran’s tour. Pink also weighed in on the controversy, expressing concern about the way Macklemore delivered his message and how Jewish members of the audience could have experienced the performance.
Macklemore responded by making a distinction between criticism of Israel and hostility toward Jewish people. He said his position is rooted in support for peace, dignity, equality and the humane treatment of people regardless of their background.
The Grammy-winning rapper also made clear that he had no intention of abandoning his position because it had become controversial. In a social media post accompanying video from his performance, he argued that supporting equal treatment for all people should not be considered controversial.
The dispute soon carried professional consequences.
Macklemore later confirmed that he would no longer appear on the remaining U.S. dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour. The tour’s promoter said multiple venues had indicated they would not allow concerts featuring Macklemore to proceed, creating the possibility that upcoming shows could be canceled.
According to Macklemore, he and Sheeran had difficult conversations as the controversy unfolded. The two artists have known each other for years, placing Sheeran in the middle of an increasingly complicated dispute involving his opening act, concert venues, advocacy organizations and fans.
Macklemore has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian rights for years, making the MetLife Stadium comments part of a much broader pattern of political activism rather than an isolated statement. His 2024 track “Hind’s Hall” also placed his position on the conflict directly into his music.
For Macklemore, the fallout has now moved well beyond a debate over what an artist says from the stage. His decision to make political advocacy part of a major stadium tour has cost him the remainder of his opening dates with one of pop music’s biggest touring acts.
Still, the rapper has shown no indication that losing those performances has changed his position.
