Macklemore is standing behind his pro-Palestinian message after comments made during his opening performances for Ed Sheeran sparked criticism and calls for his removal from the tour.
The rapper appeared at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as part of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, using his time onstage to express support for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. His remarks preceded a performance of “Hind’s Hall,” his 2024 protest song connected to the pro-Palestinian student movement that gained national attention at Columbia University.
The political message quickly became a controversy beyond the stadium.
The Israeli-American Council launched a petition calling for Macklemore to be removed from upcoming dates on Sheeran’s tour. The organization argued that concertgoers attending a major pop show should not unexpectedly find themselves at an event being used to promote a one-sided political position.
Macklemore responded by drawing a distinction between his criticism of Israel and his views toward Jewish people. Addressing Jewish listeners during his second MetLife appearance, he said his political criticism was not intended as criticism of the Jewish community.
He described his message instead as a call for peace, dignity and equal treatment for people regardless of their background.
The rapper also broadened his comments beyond Palestinians, voicing support for people facing conflict or political hardship in Lebanon, Cuba, Congo and Sudan. He also criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Macklemore later amplified his position online by posting footage from the performance and maintaining that advocating equal treatment for people should not be considered controversial.
The dispute adds another chapter to Macklemore’s increasingly outspoken political activism. The Grammy-winning artist has publicly supported Palestinian causes for several years and has incorporated those views into both his music and live performances.
Reaction to the MetLife appearances has been divided. Critics have questioned whether an opening slot on another artist’s stadium tour is an appropriate setting for such political advocacy, while supporters have argued that musicians have long used concerts and songs to address social and humanitarian issues.
The controversy also places additional attention on Sheeran’s tour, even though the remarks came from his opening act.
For Macklemore, however, the backlash does not appear to have changed the underlying message. Rather than retreating from the controversy, he has used the response to further explain his position and frame his advocacy as part of a broader call for human rights and equality.
