Luka Doncic is putting together the kind of scoring streak that earns a player a place alongside basketball legends, and the Los Angeles Lakers are enjoying every minute of it.
The superstar guard continued his remarkable start to the 2026-27 NBA season Wednesday night, pouring in 40 points to lead Los Angeles to a 116-103 road victory over the Sacramento Kings.
Doncic also contributed nine rebounds and seven assists, helping the Lakers improve to 7-2 while extending Sacramento’s early-season struggles to a 1-7 record.
The performance carried historical significance for the Lakers. With his sixth consecutive game scoring at least 35 points, Doncic joined Kobe Bryant and Elgin Baylor as the only players in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
He also established an NBA record by becoming the first player to register six straight games with at least 35 points, five rebounds, five assists and five made three-pointers.
His scoring totals during the streak tell the story of a player operating at an extraordinary level. Beginning with a 52-point explosion against the Utah Jazz on October 25, Doncic followed with performances of 41, 37, 45, 42 and 40 points.
That six-game stretch represents an average of nearly 43 points per contest, an offensive pace that has made the Lakers increasingly difficult to contain.
Against Sacramento, Doncic demonstrated just how quickly he can transform a competitive game into a comfortable advantage.
During the second quarter, he connected on a series of difficult jump shots from varying distances, including attempts from well beyond the three-point line. His individual 11-2 scoring burst helped Los Angeles take control and left the Kings struggling to find an effective defensive response.
By halftime, Doncic had already accumulated 23 points.
It marked the sixth consecutive game in which he scored at least 20 points before the break, matching a personal achievement from his time with the Dallas Mavericks in 2023. Allen Iverson also produced a six-game first-half scoring streak in 2005, making those the only such runs over the past 30 NBA seasons.
Lakers coach JJ Redick has witnessed plenty of spectacular performances from his star guard, but the current stretch stands among the most impressive.
Redick compared Doncic’s recent production with his outstanding March campaign last season, when he averaged 37.5 points over 16 games while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from three-point range.
That earlier surge included a 51-point performance against the Chicago Bulls and a combined 100 points in consecutive road games against Houston and Miami.
The latest scoring explosion has been equally impressive because of Doncic’s ability to establish his rhythm early and force opponents to adjust their defensive strategies.
Sacramento experienced that challenge firsthand. The Lakers eventually extended their advantage to 18 points, turning what had been a competitive matchup into a convincing victory.
The team’s supporting cast has also benefited from the attention Doncic commands, with his scoring creating momentum and opportunities throughout the lineup.
Center Walker Kessler described the experience as riding the momentum generated by Doncic’s extraordinary offensive production.
For Doncic, however, the individual achievements have not changed his outlook. Although he acknowledged that his current form ranks among the strongest stretches of his career, he emphasized that there is still room for improvement.
That mindset could be particularly encouraging for Los Angeles.
With Doncic producing historic numbers and the Lakers collecting victories early in the season, the franchise has plenty of reasons for optimism.
Whether this remarkable scoring pace continues remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: Doncic has opened the season with a run that belongs in the Lakers’ record books.
