Louis Vuitton Launches Takashi Murakami Re-Edition Collection with a Campaign Starring Zendaya

Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami are bringing back one of their most coveted collaborations, and the campaign launch this week stars the always fashion forward Zendaya.

As Hypebeast reports, in celebration of their era-defining collaboration, the duo returns for their 20th anniversary anniversary for yet another extensive launch. Releasing the re-edition collection of the collab that happened two decades ago, the Louis Vuitton x Murakami sparks joy and vibrancy, consisting of over 200 creations from the project.

The collection brings early 21st-century pop references back into the spotlight, featuring Murakami’s colorful view on the world. The world renowned contemporary artist continues to blend Japanese art, sci-fi, anime and whimsical kawaii character, bringing them to life by merging with modern day tropes. His vibrant repetitive motifs are playful and depicted in paintings, sculptures and films that embody the intersection of pop culture, history and fine art.

The collaboration was initially spearheaded by LV’s artistic director, Marc Jacobs, at the time. Under his guidance, they brought forward the kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of the iconic LV monogram. The motifs have been celebrated on a wide-range of pieces from the house, from leather goods to accessories including the City Bags, silk squares and scarves, sunglasses, fashion jewelry, shoes, perfumes and more.

The Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition collection sees the Murakami’s characters and motifs come to life once more. The Monogram Multicolore will feature its signature interlocking LV and floral motifs in 33 different hues. The motifs will also land on the Keepall, the Coussin, the Dauphine, the OnTheGo, the Speedy, a selection of accessories like the belts, wallets and Rolling Trunk. The smiley flowers are radiant on the Attrape-Rêve perfume bottles and the Cherry Blossom pring on the vibrant Papillon bags and Courrier Lozine 110 Fleurs trunk.

Launching in two chapters, the first drop sees the Monogram Multicolore on the City Bags with its classic white background bringing out the vibrant tones. The same motif is seen on the black backgrounds for bags like The OnTheGo and The Speedy 30 Soft bags. Murakami’s Superflat Panda character will be brought to life on the washed blue OnTheGo PM Chain and Alba BB Bags as well as others like the Couve Passeport and a black skateboard.

But last week, just before the official launch, Instagram account @liljupiterr took to social media to reveal new Zendaya for Louis Vuitton ads. In the images posted to the Instagram account, Zendaya is sporting some of re-edition’s most coveted items as she is green-screened on several backgrounds including the New York City skyline and a natural landscape next to scattering all-over prints of Takashi Murakami’s vibrant floral motifs.

In a new interview piece published by Vogue, Louis Vuitton also unveiled behind the scenes looks at the Zendaya for Louis Vuitton x Murakami shoot as she models both apparel and accessories pieces expected to be found in the collection. WWD also posted a new image of the campaign for Louis Vuitton’s relaunched collection with Murakami that is shot by Inez and Vinoodh and fronted by Zendaya.

The French luxury house has also shared the official campaign video starring Murakami himself. In the video, he can be seen sending a note to Zendaya all the way in New York from Japan to kick off the roll out of the campaign and collection launch. The house has also begun revealing campaign images of Zendaya for Louis Vuitton x Murakami on their social media.

The Louis Vuitton x Murakami will be available for order starting on January 1, 2025. The second launch will be in March 2025, focusing on Murakami’s Cherry Blossom pattern.
