Lil Nas X recently addressed the controversy surrounding his latest single, “J Christ,” and its accompanying promotional material. The track’s release, featuring cover art that depicted the rapper as Jesus on the cross and a music video with biblical imagery, sparked immediate backlash. In response, Lil Nas X took
to social media to explain his perspective and the creative process behind the single.
The rapper emphasized that his intention was not to mock Christianity or religious beliefs. “It was literally me saying, ‘Oh, I’m back. I’m back like Jesus.’ That was the whole thing,” he explained. Lil Nas X acknowledged the sensitive nature of religion for many but clarified that his portrayal was not meant as a direct affront to Christians.
One aspect of the promotion that Lil Nas X did apologize for was a video showing him consuming communion wine and wafers, which he admitted was a misguided attempt to lighten the mood. He expressed regret for not fully understanding the symbol’s gravity and the offense it might cause.
Lil Nas X, known for his hit “Industry Baby” and the controversial “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” video, recognized that his past work might lead to misinterpretations of his intentions when it comes to religious themes. He reassured his Christian fans that he is not against them, stating his purpose is to “bring people closer together and promote love.”
Concluding his message, the artist expressed a desire to move forward and reiterated that he meant “no disrespect” with either the song or its video. His open and honest communication aims to bridge understanding and respect among his diverse fan base.
