Lil Jon Reveals Emotional Final Conversation With Son Nathan Before His Death

Lil Jon is opening up about one of the most painful experiences of his life, revealing the emotional conversations he shared with his son, Nathan Smith, shortly before the 27-year-old’s death earlier this year.

The Grammy-winning rapper and producer discusses those final moments in his upcoming memoir, *I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me*, scheduled for release on October 20.

Nathan, who performed under the name DJ Young Slade, was pursuing his own career in music while dealing with personal challenges that included anxiety and physical pain. According to Lil Jon, his son had been working to address those difficulties while also navigating concerns about his future.

In the days leading up to Nathan’s disappearance, father and son had a difficult but meaningful conversation about his well-being. Lil Jon had been encouraging Nathan to make progress in his recovery, but Nathan wanted his father to recognize that he was already making an effort.

Although their discussion ended without a major confrontation, Lil Jon later questioned whether his concern had come across as excessive criticism.

After speaking with his own therapist, the hip-hop star began looking at the exchange from a different perspective. He realized that Nathan needed acknowledgment and encouragement as much as advice.

Lil Jon subsequently reached out to his son to apologize and reassure him that his efforts had not gone unnoticed. He wanted Nathan to understand that he recognized the challenges he was facing and appreciated the work he was doing to overcome them.

Neither could have known that the conversation would be their last.

On February 3, Lil Jon received the devastating news that Nathan had gone missing from his home in Milton, Georgia. An extensive search followed, ending three days later when authorities recovered his body from a nearby pond.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently determined that Nathan died from accidental drowning in circumstances involving psilocybin use.

The loss was particularly devastating for Lil Jon, whose relationship with his son extended beyond their family connection into a shared passion for music.

Nathan had established himself as DJ Young Slade, working as a producer and artist while developing his own creative identity. He was also a graduate of New York University.

At the time of his son’s death, Lil Jon had been preparing to publish his memoir, a project originally intended to document his journey from Atlanta’s music scene to international success.

The tragedy prompted him to return to the manuscript and include an intensely personal account of his family’s loss.

The book now explores not only the achievements and challenges of his entertainment career but also the emotional experience of losing his only son.

Lil Jon has explained that revisiting those memories through writing became part of his grieving process. By sharing his experience, he hopes to offer encouragement to others struggling with loss.

For an artist whose career has been defined by explosive performances, unmistakable energy and some of hip-hop’s biggest party anthems, the memoir reveals a far more vulnerable side.

And while the book chronicles decades of musical success, its most personal passages center on something much more important to Lil Jon: the love he shared with Nathan and the final opportunity he had to make sure his son knew it.
