Learning More About Dire Straits

How much do you really know about the band Dire Straits? Let’s share…

Dire Straits was born in 1977 in Deptford London, driven by founding members and real brothers Mark and David Knopfler. The band’s early influences were rag time music and of all groups the soulful Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

Dire Straits has sold over 100 million albums, earning some of the highest awards in the UK and USA, including four Grammy awards. Although the Straits have been a rock icon for decades, they have yet to receive induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Their single “Money for Nothing” in the md-80s (right at the height of the MTV Video days) hit #1 on 4 music charts across the world, featuring Sting and the classic opening guitar riff from Mark. The band disbanded in 1995 with little chance of getting back together for a reunion tour or album.
