The O’Jays, a 70s soul group from Canton, Ohio, was one of the most successful bands from the 70s, earning fame and fortune with great songs like “Love Train,” “I Love Music,” “For the Love Of Money,” “Used to Be My Girl” and more. Did you know that they first recorded under the name of ‘The Triumphs,’ then ‘The Mascots,’ then finally the ‘O’Jays’ (to honor disc jockey Eddie O’Jay, who helped manage them in their early years)?
The O’Jays’ biggest success came from a song that resonated with everyone called “Backstabbers.” The song warns men that their friend may be on the hunt to steal their girl, as the Undisputed Truth sang about in “Smiling Faces.”
The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
