Ms. Lauryn Hill not only made a rare appearance at her Columbia High School reunion in Maplewood, New Jersey earlier this month, but she also left her former classmates in awe with a surprise performance.
Social media videos captured Hill serenading the crowd with some of her iconic tracks, including “Ex-Factor,” “Doo Wop (That Thing),” and “Lost Ones” from her legendary album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. She also performed the Fugees hit “Ready or Not,” altering the lyrics to give a nod to her alma mater: “CHS taking over/ Buffalo soldier, dreadlock Rasta.”
A native of South Orange, New Jersey, Hill graduated from Columbia High School in 1993. During her time at CHS, she co-founded the Fugees and secured breakthrough acting roles in As the World Turns and Sister Act 2.
Hill’s unexpected appearance came shortly after she canceled the U.S. leg of her co-headlining tour with the Fugees, citing poor ticket sales due to media “sensationalism.” Fugees co-founder Pras responded with a diss track, suggesting that Hill was responsible for the turmoil.
Despite the recent controversy, the European leg of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour” is still set to kick off in Dublin on October 7th.
