The Las Vegas Raiders have made the decision to bench Derek Carr with only two games remaining in the regular season as announced by head coach Josh McDaniels on Wednesday. In Carr’s place will be Jarrett Stidham on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers and in next week’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Carr will be inactive, and the Raiders are mathematically alive for the postseason at 6-9, however, last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers essentially eliminated them from a reasonable contention.
However, Carr will still be owed $33 million next season fully guaranteed in case of injury. He is also guaranteed $7.5 million in 2024 in case of injury. McDaniels stated on Wednesday that, “There’s a lot to be sorted through once the season is over.”
Car has been the starter for the Raiders since they selected him nine years ago in the second round of the 2014 draft. He ha sonly missed two games in his career both due to injury. The Raiders have made their way to the playoffs twice under Carr at quarterback. However, they have not won a playoff game since 2002.
Over the course of this season, Carr has completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 3,522 yards with 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His completion rate is his worst since his rookie season and worse then his performance just last year at 68.4 percent. With 14 interceptions, he has the most in the league through week 16. He managed to throw three interceptions during their matchup against the Steelers.
