Bill & Ted are trading in their time-traveling phone booth for the Broadway stage. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, known for their roles in the cult classic “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” are set to star in a Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot.”
Directed by Jamie Lloyd, who recently directed Tom Holland in the West End production of “Romeo & Juliet,” the play will debut on Broadway in Fall 2025. This marks Reeves’ first appearance on the Broadway stage.
Reeves and Winter will take on the roles of Estragon and Vladimir, respectively. “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” the duo said in a joint statement.
Lloyd revealed to The New York Times that reuniting for this project was Reeves’ idea. “Their instant chemistry, shorthand, and friendship are invaluable. This is a deeply complex play, but it’s also very funny, and their shared sense of humor will be beneficial to the production,” Lloyd explained.
The two actors first bonded while working on “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and later reprised their roles in “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” and “Bill & Ted Face the Music.” They also voiced their characters in the animated series “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures.”
“Waiting for Godot,” an existentialist play, follows Estragon and Vladimir as they oscillate between hope and despair while awaiting the mysterious Godot. The play has appeared on Broadway four times, most recently in a 2013 production starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
While this will be Reeves’ Broadway debut, Winter has previously appeared in productions of “Peter Pan” and “The King & I” as a child. Jamie Lloyd, a seasoned director, has helmed several notable revivals, including “Betrayal” with Tom Hiddleston, “A Doll’s House” with Jessica Chastain, and “Sunset Boulevard” with Nicole Scherzinger.
This exciting news comes a year after the 35th anniversary of the first Bill & Ted film. During a 2023 appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Reeves fondly recalled his time filming the movie, highlighting his friendship with Winter as his favorite memory.
Get ready for a most excellent adventure on Broadway!
