Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard temporarily left the team this week to be with his family, who were evacuated due to the devastating Palisades Fire raging in Los Angeles. Leonard, a Pacific Palisades resident, returned home to ensure the safety of his loved ones as wildfires continued to ravage the area.
Coach Tyronn Lue Supports Leonard’s Decision
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue confirmed Leonard’s absence before the team’s game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.
“You definitely have to take care of home,” Lue told reporters. “Going back, checking on his family and kids, making sure they’re well. And he got back, and they’re doing OK, so just happy and thankful for that.”
Despite Leonard’s absence, the Clippers played as scheduled, losing 126-103 to Denver.
The Impact of the Palisades Fire
The Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history, has already burned over 11,800 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 structures in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Tens of thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate.
Leonard purchased a home in the Pacific Palisades in 2021, placing his family at the heart of the affected area. His decision to leave the team reflects his commitment to prioritizing their safety during this crisis.
Leonard’s Season and Return
Leonard recently returned to action after recovering from knee inflammation that sidelined him at the start of the season. He made his season debut on Jan. 4 against Atlanta and had planned to play his third game of the season against Denver.
In his limited appearances so far, Leonard is averaging 10 points in 20 minutes per game as he works back to full strength.
As the Clippers continue their season, Leonard’s absence underscores the personal impact of the wildfires that have devastated Southern California, affecting families, homes, and entire communities.
