Katy Perry is set to be honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards next month, where she will also deliver a special performance. This marks Perry’s return to the VMA stage for the first time since 2017, when she both hosted and performed at the event.
Perry joins an illustrious group of past Vanguard recipients, including Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott. Throughout her career, Perry has won five VMAs, with her first three coming in 2011 for Video of the Year (“Firework”), Best Collaboration, and Best Special Effects (both for “E.T.” featuring Kanye West).
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, chief content officer of music at Paramount+ and president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.”
Taylor Swift leads the 2024 VMA nominations with 10 nods, including eight for her “Fortnight” music video and nominations for Artist of the Year and Best Pop. Close behind is Post Malone, who collaborated with Swift on “Fortnight” and earned nine nominations, including one for his country hit “I Had Some Help” featuring Morgan Wallen.
The 2024 MTV VMAs will air live on September 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern from the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York. Fan voting across 15 gender-neutral categories begins Tuesday and runs through August 30, with voting for Best New Artist remaining open throughout the show.
