Joey Porter Jr. is wasting little time embracing his fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys.
The 26-year-old cornerback landed in Dallas following a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ending a relationship that had become increasingly strained as Porter sought a new contract entering the final year of his rookie deal.
Dallas sent Pittsburgh a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft and a second-round pick in 2028 to acquire the former second-round selection.
Porter’s departure from Pittsburgh came after an offseason dominated by questions about his contract and availability. A back problem kept him out throughout training camp and the preseason, and he also missed the Steelers’ first three games of the regular season.
Once the trade was completed, however, the tone surrounding Porter changed quickly.
He participated in practice with Dallas and was not listed on the Cowboys’ Thursday injury report, opening the possibility that his Cowboys debut could arrive sooner rather than later.
Porter also made clear that his frustrations in Pittsburgh extended beyond football.
Speaking after arriving in Dallas, he described the Steelers’ contract negotiations as a difficult process and said he came away feeling both disrespected and undervalued. Rather than dwelling on the breakup, though, Porter said he considers that chapter finished and is concentrating on his opportunity with the Cowboys.
That opportunity comes with an interesting contract wrinkle.
Porter still does not have the long-term agreement he wanted while playing for Pittsburgh. Despite that, he is prepared to take the field for Dallas under his existing contract because he believes his new organization has already demonstrated how highly it values him by making the trade.
He is apparently thinking beyond this season as well.
Porter has expressed interest in remaining with the Cowboys for the rest of his career, provided Dallas ultimately wants the same arrangement. Whether that leads to a long-term contract remains unresolved, but the early relationship between player and team appears considerably warmer than the one he left behind.
Dallas is getting a cornerback with significant starting experience despite Porter still being relatively early in his NFL career.
Selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Porter appeared in 47 games during three seasons with Pittsburgh. He accumulated 165 tackles, 31 passes defended and three interceptions over that stretch.
Last season, Porter appeared in 14 games, finishing with 52 tackles, 14 passes defended and an interception.
Now the next phase of his career begins in Dallas.
The Cowboys have added a young and experienced defensive back who believes he has something to prove. Porter, meanwhile, gets the new beginning he wanted and a chance to turn a turbulent contract dispute into a potentially much longer stay in Texas.
