Jelly Roll Honors Toby Keith with Heartfelt Tribute at Nashville’s Big Bash

Country music star Jelly Roll rang in the new year with a heartfelt tribute to one of his musical idols, the late Toby Keith. During Nashville’s Big Bash New Year’s Eve special on December 31, Jelly Roll performed Keith’s iconic 1993 debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” as part of a five-song set that had the crowd on its feet.

A Tribute to a Legend
Before launching into the classic track, Jelly Roll addressed the audience with an emotional dedication:

“I would like to dedicate this next song to one of the greatest country music superstars that ever lived. In his memory, God rest your soul Big Dog Daddy, Toby Keith baby!”

The tribute marked another chapter in Jelly Roll’s ongoing efforts to honor Keith, who passed away in February 2024 at the age of 62 after battling stomach cancer.

A Year of Homage and Heart
Jelly Roll, 40, has frequently performed “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in Keith’s memory, first unveiling the cover at the Stagecoach Festival in April alongside rapper T-Pain. The duo later released a recorded version of the song exclusively for Amazon Music, with proceeds supporting the Toby Keith Foundation, which provides aid to pediatric cancer patients.

Reflecting on his connection to the country legend, Jelly Roll told Variety:

“I had been covering ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’ for about a year now at most of my shows, just kind of honoring Toby as he was getting sick before he passed away.”

Jelly Roll also revealed that Keith’s son, Stelen, had given his blessing for the cover, calling it one of the best versions he’d ever heard.

A Fitting Finale to 2024
Jelly Roll’s Big Bash performance capped off a whirlwind year that included multiple tributes to Keith. He took part in the star-studded Toby Keith: American Icon special in July, performing alongside country heavyweights like Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Darius Rucker, and Carrie Underwood.

In addition to “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” Jelly Roll’s New Year’s Eve set featured hits from his own catalog, including “I Am Not Okay,” “Need a Favor,” “Son of a Sinner,” and “Liar.” His performance showcased the heartfelt storytelling and emotional depth that have earned him legions of fans.

Carrying Toby Keith’s Legacy Forward
Jelly Roll’s tribute to Toby Keith isn’t just a nod to the past—it’s a symbol of how Keith’s influence continues to shape modern country music. For Jelly Roll, Keith wasn’t just a musical hero—he was a source of inspiration who gave him the courage to embrace country music as part of his evolving sound.

“Toby Keith was one of the artists that from afar, even though he would never have known it, encouraged me to do country music,” Jelly Roll said.

With his performances and charitable efforts, Jelly Roll ensures that Keith’s legacy lives on, blending respect for tradition with his own fresh, soulful style.
