Crocs is going high fashion for its latest collaboration with French fashion house Jean Paul Gaultier.
As Hypebae reports, off the back of super successful collaborations with designer Simone Rocha and Swarovski, Crocs has turned its attention to another luxury fashion label: Jean Paul Gaultier. Paying tribute to the brand’s distinctive design language and legendary innovations, the duo just teased the new Jean Paul Gaultier x Crocs collab that reimagines signature silhouettes like the corset and cone bra through instantly recognizable prints and details.
Launching across the Bae Clog and Classic Clog silhouettes, the new collection includes a corset-inspired colorway along with a faux leather clog, complete with Gaultier’s signature safety pin motif. So far, it appears that the collection features three distinct designs, landing in black and white, pale pink and all black.
The brand states that its making this line of shoes to cater to diehard fashion fans, and many across social media seem to be thrilled at the announcement. However, with JPG’s storied history as a leader in avant-garde fashion, not all said fans are thrilled with the new collab. In a response to the brand’s Instagram tease post, some followers posted comments like, “Stop doing this to your brand yall are gaultier not Claire’s,” “Sister… do you need some money?!,” “I can’t believe you’re ruining your brand like this,” and “Is it April Fool’s Day??? Nooooooo!! 😂”
And then there’s the unforeseen political aspect to the announcement. As one follower posted, “Such a shame that a brand like @jeanpaulgaultier whose history is steeped in queer culture is collaborating with a brand, @crocs that pulled its support from dragcon after hate and backlash to our community.”
At present, an official release date for the Jean Paul Gaultier x Crocs collection has yet to be confirmed, but according to Crocs, the new silhouettes will land sometime in August.
