Jazz Chisholm Jr. is inching closer to his return to the Yankees—and his next role may come with a twist.
The 26-year-old infielder is set to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset this Thursday, where he’ll be tested at third base. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed the decision as the team assesses Chisholm’s future role amid a shifting infield.
Out since April 30 with a right oblique strain, Chisholm could rejoin the team as early as next week. Though he’s a natural second baseman with 196 games under his belt, the Yankees experimented with him at the hot corner after last year’s trade from Miami. Despite some learning curves, Chisholm held his own, posting a .940 fielding percentage over 45 starts at third.
The need for flexibility became urgent after Oswaldo Cabrera’s season-ending ankle injury and Gleyber Torres’ offseason departure. Oswald Peraza has filled in but struggled offensively, opening the door for Chisholm’s potential shift.
With DJ LeMahieu heating up, Boone emphasized the evolving nature of the infield strategy but praised Chisholm’s attitude: “He’s been awesome about it.”
Whether at second or third, Chisholm’s versatility could be a key factor in stabilizing the Yankees’ lineup.
